Read: 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Satan’s first question to Eve began, “Did God really say…?” And he’s still getting tons of mileage from that same line today. You’d think by now we’d be on to him. But no. Instead we find groups of well-meaning people rallying against some of God’s clearly stated commands, because it “feels right.” The devil can have a field day playing upon our emotions if we’re not careful.
That’s why Paul goes on to say in Chapter 4, verse 3, “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.”
“You have your truth. I have mine,” people say. That’s not logical since there can be only one truth. Would you ride an elevator designed by a devotee of relativism?
This is why attending worship every week in a Bible believing church surrounds us with God’s truth and helps us grow in wisdom because we acknowledge Scripture as infallible. Pastors, church elders, deacons, and deaconesses bless us with their theological education. Sometimes, God’s Word is difficult to swallow or follow. We question, “surely it doesn’t really mean that?”
Bible study classes allow us to challenge, ask questions, and yes, even express doubts. Didn’t the disciple say to “Be like the Bereans” who checked his preaching against Scripture? A church where questions are encouraged helps people grow. One where questions aren’t allowed does not and could lean into cultism.
Holy Spirit, breathe Your truth into us through the Scriptures You inspired. Keep us from error and help us become obedient to those commands we find difficult because they run counter to our current societal values. Let us value Your Word above all, and protect our hearts and minds from false doctrine.
