Read: Matthew 1: 19-20
How often do we ask a new acquaintance, “What do you do?” Their answer tells us something about their talents, interests, or skills. “I’m an artist,” creates a far different idea about a person than “I’m an accountant.” Like Shakespeare’s stage on which we are all players, Jesus’ father figure on earth, Joseph, played a vital role, then slipped quietly off stage left. We don’t know how long he lived, when he died, or even what kind of man he was. Did he have a wicked sense of humor, or was he serious and contemplative?
Yet we know Joseph was the pillar of strength at Jesus’ birth. Shortly after, he protected them from Herod’s slaughter of the innocents when he obeyed the angel and led his family to safety in Egypt. Joseph supported Mary through her pregnancy, the birth of Jesus, and provided for his family until his death. He taught Jesus a trade that he plied until it was time to begin His ministry. Then, poof! No more Joseph! Without this man, Mary and Jesus would have been at the mercy of a society that valued women least of all.
Blessed are today’s quiet “pillars” like Joseph, who breathe life into ministries to complete God’s work. They faithfully offer their time, talent, and treasure as they toil quietly behind the scenes These volunteers, like the bakers, greeters, and financial backers, support the ministry leader so the church can be the hands and feet of Christ on earth.
Dear Holy Spirit, guide and use us in any way You see fit to promote Your perfect and holy plans for each of us, our community, church, and beyond, to the world.
