Satan’s Greatest Weapon

by | Dec 6, 2024 | 2024 Advent Devotional

Read: Ephesians 6:12

It was Halloween, and people filled the little boy’s pumpkin-shaped container with handfuls of candy. They laughed at his clever devil costume, with its perky horns and tail that ended in a dart.

We’ve made Satan a caricature of himself and laugh at this “mythological” creature that once terrified people hundreds of years ago. Now, evil is man-made and willpower will save us. There’s no great cosmic war between angels and demons, between Satan’s minions and each of us.

Believing that is like believing that a bomber has not entered one’s airspace. Flying low below the radar, the Northrup B12 would penetrate enemy air defenses and because it’s “invisible,” it easily accomplished its mission. Stealth bombers like the B12 work well because they’re not seen.

And that’s one of Satan’s greatest lies for the same reason. If we don’t see him, we won’t be prepared to fight him.

We see the results of evil around us. Wars rage between neighbors and nations. Death and fear surround us as we aim our weapons at each other. But “each other” is not the foe. Instead, it’s the greed, lust for power, ambition, and inflated egos—Satan’s stock in trade—that we embrace because we’re blind to the source.

If we could see Satan at work, hear him collude with his demons, and see the awesome power of a defending archangel, we wouldn’t be as vulnerable as we are to his attacks.
We wouldn’t leave our home without the armor of God Paul writes about in verses 14 to 17 in Chapter 6. The “belt of truth” will protect us from Satan’s lies. Christ’s love will be our breastplate and protect our hearts. Our faith will deflect the demon’s arrows.

Make no mistake, there is a spiritual battle raging around us, and just because it’s hidden like the stealth bomber, it is no less real or deadly.

Lord Jesus, surround us with your Holy Spirit of wisdom and truth, so we can defeat the enemy through Your power. Thank you for your angels, though unseen, who protect us in ways we may never know…until we meet them in your heavenly realm.
