Don’t Underestimate Those Jars

Read: 2 Corinthians 4:7-9

Like trying to wipe out that persistent gizmo that pops up everywhere in the whack-a-mole carnival game, the world could not wipe out those pesky early Christians who challenged its sinful lifestyle. Even today, through persecutions, social pressure, even death, Christ's followers continue to pop up everywhere.

Physically and emotionally, frail though we may be, we have the power of the Holy Spirit deep within each of us. We see death as entering a new and better life. We see suffering as a God-sent means to make us stronger or more faith-filled. A footnote in my NIV Bible reads, “Your current circumstances are not as important as what you do with them.”

Christ gives us the strength and wisdom to move in any circumstance according to His will for us. In the end, our faith will grow stronger, despite the outcome of any situation.
And so, as Paul writes in today’s verse, we do not crush easily; we may not know exactly what to do, but we will move in faith; we will weather any storm, and even death cannot destroy us.

Unlike in the real whack-a-mole game where someone could wipe out all the popping-up gizmos, we are invincible under God’s power. Although Christ’s death on the Cross looked like a gigantic failure, we know in that moment Satan was defeated for all time, and heaven opened for Jesus’ followers.

And so, what appears a loss in the Christian life may in reality be a gain.
Our Holy Spirit-driven faith and wisdom lie deep in our frail selves, jars of clay, and that makes us spiritually invincible.

Praise you, Lord Jesus, Holy Spirit, Father God, for Your presence in each of us. You make us strong when we are weak, wise when we are foolish, and safe when we are vulnerable.
