Read: Romans 8:28
Choosing what to order in a restaurant is one thing. Deciding to take that promotion and move to another state, or remain in one’s current home surrounded by family and friends, is another. When weighing our pros and cons, do we ask God what He wants us to do for His glory?
Romans 8:28 tells us that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, but how do we show our love for God? We seek to know and obey Him, to do His will. Scripture tells us that if we ask, He will answer. “So I say to you: ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Luke 11:9 (NIV)
The last clause in verse 28 tells us He works for those who have been called according to His purposes. God has a divine purpose for everything, and we who love Him have a role in fulfilling them, even though we may never know what they are.
Proverbs 3:5 puts faith into action. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
So if we love Him, will we have happy endings while we somehow manage to complete whatever task He had in mind for us? Will we make perfect choices? As events unfold, perhaps there may be bumps in the road. Yet Romans 8:28 assures us God uses our obedience to fulfill His purposes while holding us close. Even when we question our decisions, all will proceed according to His will.
Romans 8:28 and Proverbs 3:5 show us how to walk by faith, not by sight. Standing on the foundation of His promises, we will not be shaken.
Sovereign Lord, remind us we need not dread decisions. You will guide our paths, even when we can’t see the way. Let us rest in the knowledge that You will make any course correction necessary to fulfill Your purposes. Because You are all wise, we do not need to be.
